Planfarm commenced in 1974 as a partnership of Peter Falconer, John Abbie and Ken Boughton all New Zealanders who came to Western Australia in the 1960’s as agricultural advisors to work in the many farm improvement groups which were established at that time.
These groups were initiated by Professor Henry Schapper of the University of Western Australia School of Agriculture with the purpose of introducing modern business management skills to the farming community. Peter and John worked with the Wongan Hills Farm improvement group which formed the basis for Planfarm.
In the early days, the focus was on farm budgeting and the introduction of improved crop and livestock husbandry to lift profitability. The farmers in the Wongan Hills group were very receptive to advice and through their initiative and assisted by Planfarm, many have gone on to build substantial agricultural and non-agricultural businesses. Some of these clients are now in their third generation with Planfarm and we are proud to have played our part in their success through variable prices and seasons.
From a base of three advisors, Planfarm now employs 25 professionals and staff and along with farm management advice, provide specialist advisors in agronomy and grain marketing. These additional services have been in response to increasing sophistication and scale of farm businesses and changes in the grain marketing environment in Australia. Our advisors continue to assist clients to take advantage of the emerging opportunities in the Western Australian agricultural sector.
In addition we are regularly retained by major banks to assist in lifting client performance along with industry research bodies such as Grains Research and Development Corporation, Meat and Livestock Australia, Department of Agriculture and Food and the University of Western Australia. One of our consultants Peter Newman now heads a national extension programme funded by the Australian Herbicide Resistance Initiative aimed at limiting the impact of resistant weeds on farm profitability.
Planfarm now have a presence across the Western Australian wheatbelt however our key focus has not changed and that is to deliver value to our clients by quality independent advice tailored to meet their individual goals. Another constant over the life of Planfarm has been the use of data to benchmark and set targets for farm performance. Our experienced consultants all know what a top performing farm looks like and how to achieve this.
Today we are proud to service over 480 farmers including some of the state’s most successful and innovative farmers. We look forward to being a part of their continued success in the wonderful business which is agriculture.
