Meet The Financial Bloke – and stop being so bloody nice!

You may know the feeling: a podcast comes along, and you become a bit addicted, eagerly awaiting the next episode. I have been listening to this bloke for a month or so now, and The Financial Bloke is one of these for me. Ben Law, The Financial Bloke, is based in Queensland, and part of his work is The AgriCoach Wealth and Wisdom Podcast.

Home – The Financial Bloke

Ben has a farming family background and spent 20 years providing Financial Advice to farming families. He now unashamedly focuses his Strategic Coaching on farming families and agribusinesses who are looking to really grab the bull by the horns; to focus, plan, prioritise and work through the roadblocks they’re facing. His own words, and he backs these with highly enlightening podcast and blog material. He has also introduced a PODCAST MINI series, short 8-10 minute podcasts with to-the-point tips and no fluff.

It was one of the PODCAST MINI’s that caught my attention, and I wanted to share with you.

Stop being so bloody nice!

In this podcast, Ben tackles one of the biggest myths holding family businesses back: that being “nice” keeps the peace and holds things together.

It doesn’t.

In fact, being nice could be the thing keeping your family stuck.

Ben shares a raw story from his early career that revealed the difference between being respected and being effective — and lays out four practical strategies to build real influence (even if your family avoids every hard conversation)

You’ll discover:

  • Why “being nice” is often the weakest leadership strategy
  • The difference between rapport and real-life influence
  • How to earn the right to challenge your family – without blowing things up
  • A powerful one-liner that can unblock even the most stuck conversations

“You cannot ‘nice’ your way through the tough decisions, but it is critical to be nice and respectful”.

Ben also has some cracking podcasts on succession and, in particular, understanding the different generations, as he calls them: The handing-on generation (AKA The Oldies) and The next generation (AKA The Young’ens). Go to Podcasts #31 & #32.

If these podcasts raise questions for you about how to initiate the succession conversation or if you need a facilitator, please contact your Planfarm consultant.

I urge all our readers to give it a listen. It is a fantastic resource for building your knowledge and developing your skills in family farming businesses.
